Plano is a program that was a dominate force in the 90’s, and while they’ve hit a skid in recent years, it appears as if though the Wildcats from Plano are re-emerging with a roar.  In 2007 the Plano Wildcats exited the playoffs after going head to head with the State Champion, Euless Trinity, in one of the most intense games of the playoff season.  This year, they seek vengeance…..

Plano returns 10 starters from a 13-2 Division 1 semi-finalist, and to make the returning experience more daunting, the wildcats return four All-State first teamers. On offense the team returns 6 starters, three of which are all-state and all-district selections. Rex Burkhead leads the way offensively as he accounted for 29 touchdowns and over 1700 yards.  Burkhead will most likely see the brunt of his action as the starting running back, but don’t be surprised to see him lined up behind center or catching passes from All-State QB Carson Merger at wide-out.  With an experienced line, expect both QB Merger and RB Burkhead to put up phenomenal numbers.   This Plano offensive squad doesn’t return a lot of depth, but the roster is top heavy with talent.  We expect Plano to have one of the best offenses in the state, and a challenge to any state title contender.

While the offense is impressively stacked, the defense is also very capable.  The Defense returns 4 starters, one of which is an all-state selection (LaRon Kelly, FS).  The Secondary will be the anchor of defense against a pass happy Region 1, they return the brunt of the experience.  FS Kelly, and SS Collins are the returning duo that will help inexperienced Corners adjust to varsity play.  OLB Phillip Hale and DE Luke Terrell will anchor the youthful front seven.  The defense lacks overall experience, but the nature of this team provides many athletes on offense and defense willing to plug in during times of need.  It would be no surprise to see Rex Burkhead play FS from time to time or All-State WR Kris Lott play Corner-back when needed.  All in all, this entire defense is young, but they will be salty enough to allow the explosive offensive power to plow through opponents.

It is only our speculation, based on paper facts that this Plano team is as ready as any other top program to compete for a State Title.  If it were not for a lack of depth, Plano would perhaps be a heavy favorites to walk in and steal the title from the seemingly death grip Trinity seems to have over it in preseason polls.  As they say though, the games are played on the fields not in press rooms….
