DE - Brayden Burnett Over the last four years, when people thought, ‘Texas Football’, they thought of the Carroll Dragons. They have been a prime example of what our state envisions our football programs to be. It has been literally decades since the state had witnessed the formation of a dynasty and a run of complete dominance. In 2007 however, the ride ended with a season that recorded two losses and a surprisingly early exit from the playoffs. Most football fans will readily admit, however, that had it not been for injury to key players, the Dragons conquest of playoff dominance may have continued. With Coach Wasson gearing up for his second season as head coach of the Carroll Dragons, the team finds an unusual chip on their shoulder, to be the best. Not all is lost on Offense, although only 1 starter returns from what was a well oiled machine last season. There is still much to look forward to. This year the Dragons will break in a new QB, the heir to Dodges pads and shoes is Kyle Padron. Pardon accounted for 340 passing yards and 2 TD’s in his play last season, he also lead the team during the final game of their playoff run where a long streak finally ended. Padron has shown great ability, and could be as good if not better then any of his predecessors. The task is daunting, but in South Lake they live for this type of pressure. The lone returning starter is OL Will McWriter, who will provide needed experience upfront in order for the Dragons to get back on the path of Offensive dominance. The success of the team hangs on how quickly the young newcomers can step up to the plate and produce, since the Dragons run on a system, and are not independently reliant on any one part. This should come rather easy. If history has taught us anything in regards to the Dragons, its that they are almost always ready to compete. Other offensive players to keep an eye out for are RB Tom Avers, WR D. Powell, and OL Kody Weaver.
Critics will say that with Former Head Coach Todd Dodge gone, the dragons are no more. In response to the critics, you aren’t familiar with the Dragons if you can draw that conclusion. The community flourished athletically long before Dodge set foot on campus. The community, the administration, and the coaching staffs of past and present have built this great Texas program. What is built correctly, never crumbles easily or without a fight. |
