The Break Down A district that was not set in stone until nearly a month after the realignment that was released in February of 2008 features a slew of teams capable of taking the District Crown. With a cross-town rivalry in just about every game, this should be one of the more entertaining districts to keep track of. Strake Jesuit and Stratford seem to be best positioned to battle it out for the crown, but it would be foolish to count out the Memorial Mustangs from coming in and stealing the show. Although Andrew Luck has departed from the campus of Stratford, the winning mentality he brought is still very much alive. The program looks to be poised to become one of the area’s upper echelon teams and one any district opponent should fear. They are young, but they are very talented. They return a number of defensive players, and quite possibly could have one of the better secondary’s in district 18-5A. They are indeed The Gridiron’s pick for the 18-5A crown. The QB spot has a number of various options; all showed the ability to take the lead during spring practices this past spring football season. Strake Jesuit also returns a number of starters from a team that was both considered talented, and salty. They surprised early last season, and that shock value success of this private school in south west Houston isn’t expected to change this year. While the top teams are more in pace to compete for the crown, the Memorial Mustangs have quite a bit of returning players to make their case. Among them is All-District WR Daniel Neumann, who accounted for 379 yards on 22 receptions. Davis Miller also returns as the Quarterback, and has shown glimpses of what he is capable of doing. Hastings, and Elsik alike will be vying for a playoff spot, but have many questions that need to be answered. This entire district looks to be very competitive from top to bottom. . |
